Caretaker Prime Minister’s Climate Change Strategy: Advocating Global Responsibility and Sustainable Energy Solutions
Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, in a recent interview with an American TV channel, urged developed nations to shoulder responsibility for climate change, asserting that Pakistan should not be unfairly held accountable for its consequences. Kakar highlighted the severe impact of shifting climate patterns on regions like Sindh and Balochistan, causing devastating floods.
Central to his message was the advocacy for the initiation of a ‘Loss and Damage Fund,’ independent of loans from banking institutions. Kakar stressed that these funds should be supplementary and merit-based to effectively address losses and damages resulting from climate change.
The prime minister emphasized the importance of fostering open dialogues on climate change instead of imposing policies on nations and businesses. He proposed the establishment of a global structure under the United Nations, supported by significant financial institutions, to comprehensively manage the Loss and Damage Fund. Kakar urged affluent nations to demonstrate responsibility in addressing climate-related challenges.
Additionally, Kakar outlined a strategy to transition coal-fired projects into ventures focused on renewable energy. Highlighting the necessity for targeted investments in initiatives to combat climate change, he suggested that Gulf countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Western nations could play a crucial role in contributing to these efforts.
According to Kakar, this presents a significant opportunity for Pakistan and investing nations to collaborate on sustainable energy solutions.
