Cruise Disrupted: Ship Denied Entry to New Zealand Due to Hull Contamination with 3 Mussels and Coral

Unexpected Hull Issues Disrupt P&O Pacific Adventure Cruise Itinerary

Passengers aboard P&O’s Pacific Adventure cruise found themselves stranded at sea, facing seasickness and disappointment after the ship was denied entry to multiple ports in New Zealand. The vessel, departing from Sydney, Australia, was turned away due to invasive species on its hull. Despite scheduled efforts to clean the hull, challenging diving conditions prolonged the process.

The cruise, originally intended to include several stops in New Zealand, had to be rerouted, leaving passengers with prolonged seasickness. Unfavorable biosecurity laws in New Zealand prevented the ship from docking. Divers were tasked with removing juvenile mussels and Lace Coral, but conditions hampered their efforts.

The unexpected change in itinerary prompted discontent among passengers. Reports indicate that seasickness has become widespread, with one passenger noting a depletion of sick bags. Expressing frustration, some passengers voiced their disappointment on social media, with one individual vowing never to travel with P&O again.

Initially offering a 50% “future cruise credit” scheme, P&O faced backlash from passengers. Subsequently, the cruise operator revised its compensation, now providing passengers with a refund and $200 onboard credit. In response to the situation, a P&O spokesperson apologized for the change in itinerary and thanked guests for their patience, acknowledging that not all passengers may choose to cruise with the company again. P&O Australia has yet to respond to further inquiries from Business Insider.
